Autumn Dog Walking Essentials: A Practical UK Checklist

For an autumn dog walk, pack fresh water and a bowl, poo bags, a secure lead, a towel and a light if you might be out after dusk. Add treats, your phone and suitable clothing, then adjust the kit to the route and your dog's needs.

Your autumn dog walking checklist

• Lead, collar or harness: check the fit, clips and condition before leaving.
• Collar and ID tag: check that the contact details are current.
• Fresh water and a drinking bowl: carry a supply suited to your outing.

Plan the return journey before packing

Think about when you will get home, not just when you leave. A route that starts in daylight may finish after dusk. Check the forecast and local sunset time, and make sure the route is suitable for the conditions.

For a new woodland route, plan an easier alternative if the paths turn out to be muddy. For a familiar park, check its opening hours. Give yourself room to shorten the outing without having to hurry your dog back along an unfamiliar path.

Pack for the walk you are actually taking. A short local loop and a morning away from home need different amounts of carrying space, water and spare clothing.

Keep water and the bowl together
